Ovael is developing an integrated virtual-reality platform consisting of a VR headset, haptic gloves, a full-body haptic suit, and teleoperation software. They are seeking an Industrial Design Engineer to lead the physical design of their VR hardware ecosystem, focusing on product appearance, ergonomics, and manufacturing preparation.
Responsibilities:
- Establish one consistent design language across the headset, gloves, and suit
- Lead each product from concept development through a prototype-ready design package
- Produce sketches, concept variations, 3D CAD models, technical drawings, and photorealistic renders
- Design products around real electronic, mechanical, optical, sensor, thermal, and power requirements
- Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, software, haptics, and manufacturing engineers
- Conduct ergonomic, anthropometric, comfort, mobility, and fit studies
- Establish colors, materials, finishes, textures, lighting, and branding
- Design charging connections, controls, status indicators, access panels, and replaceable components
- Support rapid prototyping, fit testing, user testing, and design validation
- Prepare designs for manufacturing, assembly, maintenance, cleaning, and repair
- Maintain organized CAD files, specifications, revisions, and design documentation
- Design the visor, housing, facial interface, head strap, controls, and adjustment mechanisms
- Optimize weight distribution, ventilation, balance, comfort, and field of view
- Package displays, lenses, cameras, sensors, speakers, batteries, circuit boards, wiring, and cooling components
- Account for interpupillary-distance adjustment and prescription-lens compatibility
- Design the glove structure, textile layers, wrist enclosure, closures, and protective covers
- Package finger-tracking sensors, haptic actuators, electronics, batteries, wiring, and connectors
- Preserve finger movement, grip ability, comfort, ventilation, and range of motion
- Design for multiple hand sizes, left/right configurations, cleaning, and repair
- Design the full-body suit, modular panels, closures, cable routes, and adjustment systems
- Package body-tracking sensors, haptic actuators, electronics, batteries, wiring, and control modules
- Preserve full-body mobility while maintaining secure sensor placement
- Design adjustable sizing, ventilation, washable layers, and removable electronic modules
- Address comfort, weight distribution, durability, and repeated use

Requirements:
- Professional experience in industrial or product design
- Strong portfolio showing wearables, consumer electronics, or complex physical products
- Advanced 3D modeling and surface-design skills
- Experience with SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Rhino, Alias, Blender, or comparable software
- Understanding of ergonomics, materials, textiles, manufacturing, and physical prototyping
- Ability to design around mechanical and electronic constraints
- Ability to develop multiple products as one integrated system
- Strong documentation, visualization, and presentation skills
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Experience designing VR, AR, mixed-reality, or haptic hardware
- Experience with head-worn devices, gloves, suits, medical wearables, or sports equipment
- Knowledge of injection molding, CNC machining, textiles, foam, composites, and additive manufacturing
- Understanding of sensors, actuators, batteries, wiring, thermal systems, and electronics packaging
- Experience developing adjustable products for different body sizes
- Experience taking hardware from concept through a functional prototype
- Familiarity with design for manufacturing, assembly, repair, and cleaning
