Job Title: Engineer – Design, Junior
Job Summary
The Junior Design Engineer –Supports High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) operations by designing and documenting support fixtures, gauges, and manufacturing aids used throughout the casting process. This role focuses on marking stands, quench stands, biscuit stands, handling fixtures, inspection gauges, and cell layout updates to improve safety, efficiency, quality, and ergonomics. Convert concepts and sketches into detailed CAD models and production-ready drawings, supports manufacturing and quality teams, and assists with prototyping and testing. Designs must meet HPDC process requirements, plant standards, quality and safety regulations.
Responsibility
- Design and detail HPDC support fixtures and tooling, including but not limited to:
o Marking and identification stands
o Quench stands and cooling fixtures
o Biscuit stands and scrap handling fixtures
o Part handling and transfer stands
o Simple manufacturing aids and workstations
- Design and document inspection gauges, checking fixtures, and reference tools used for quality verification.
- Develop and maintain HPDC cell layouts, including:
o Die casting machines
o Trim presses
o Quench stations
o Inspection stations
o Material flow and operator access
- Create fully detailed 3D models and 2D drawings including GD&T, materials, finishes, weld details, and safety
- notes.
- Convert sketches, redlines, and verbal concepts into accurate CAD designs using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent software.
- Support prototype builds and shop trials, including occasional hands-on work for fit-up, testing, and validation.
- Use 3D printing to produce simple prototypes, ergonomic mockups, or gauge concepts.
- Ensure fixtures and gauges:
o Meet HPDC thermal, contamination, and durability requirements
o Are safe and ergonomic for operators
o Comply with quality system procedures and plant standards
- Maintain and control engineering documentation, ensuring correct revision levels and proper release of drawings.
- Support Manufacturing, Quality, and Process Engineering teams with:
o Process documentation
o Continuous improvement of activities
o Fixture modifications and updates
- Coordinate with internal fabrication teams and external suppliers to clarify design intent and resolve build issues.
- Update and control plant and cell layout drawings as equipment or process changes occur.
- Adhere to all Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) regulations.
- Occasional hands-on work for prototyping and testing.
- Other duties as assigned.
Academic/Educational Requirements
- Completion of a two-to-three-year college program in engineering design and drafting technology or in a related field is required or completion of a three-to-four-year apprenticeship program or four to five years of related experience plus completion of college or industry courses in drafting is required.

- Proficient in AutoCAD, SolidWorks or related 3D engineering modeling software, and Microsoft Office (Excel).
- Ability to read schematics, assembly drawings, blueprints, product specifications and geometric dimensioning tolerance (GD&T).
- Ability to work in a team environment to share opinions with co-workers, colleagues and peers about successful projects, problematic projects and drafting techniques. Meet with engineers, designers, other drafting professionals and various consultants to obtain additional information, clarification and feedback about drawings and to discuss projects' challenges.
- Ability to work independently while ensuring work meets the designers', engineers', technologists’ or operators’ vision.
