Senior Backend Engineer

The Senior Backend Engineer will design and implement scalable backend systems, optimize platform performance, and lead the development of backend services while collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities:

• Design and implement scalable, reliable backend systems - from architecture through production deployment
• Harden and optimize the platform for stability, performance, and release readiness
• Lead implementation of backend services, APIs, and data models with a strong focus on maintainability strategies
• Experience in data modeling and working on No SQL database like MongoDB as Unqork heavily uses MongoDB
• Set technical standards and establish best practices across code quality, architecture, and system design
• Act as a hands-on technical leader reviewing code, debugging complex issues, and improving performance where needed
• Collaborate closely with Product, QA, and Design to translate business problems into well-structured technical solutions
• Hands on experience with ability to utilize AI for development and analysis
• Ask the right technical questions early to clarify requirements and reduce downstream risk
• Help define engineering roadmaps, technical milestones, and delivery metrics
• Improve development workflows and processes to increase team velocity and reliability

Requirements:

• 5+ years of relevant backend engineering experience building production systems
• Proven experience designing and implementing complex software systems end-to-end
• Understands Database Modeling, managing complex Database Transactions, and ensuring data integrity across distributed systems
• Strong experience with API design
• Deep knowledge of data modeling, normalization, query optimization, and indexing
• Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB
• Experience building REST and/or GraphQL services
• Strong proficiency in a modern backend language (Node.js preferred)
• Experience shipping highly reliable systems in cloud environments
• Ability to operate independently while contributing to broader technical direction
• Experience working across cross-functional teams to deliver complex product features
