Day-to-day administration of VMware vSphere, vCenter, and the 200+ VM estate — provisioning, patching, performance monitoring, and capacity planning.
Veeam Backup & Replication management — job configuration, scheduling, monitoring, test restores, retention policy, and backup health reporting.
Server infrastructure support alongside the Director of IT Operations — primarily Linux server administration, patching, and lifecycle management, with some Windows server coverage.
SUSE Manager (SUMA) — Linux patch management, configuration management, and software distribution across the server estate.
Storage management — monitoring and maintaining the underlying storage infrastructure (SAN/NAS) and ensuring adequate capacity.
Contribution to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) initiatives — working toward declarative, auditable infrastructure management for on-premises and cloud resources.
Participation in IT Operations on-call rotation for infrastructure incidents and emergencies.
Cross-Coverage Responsibilities DataXstream is committed to eliminating single points of failure across IT Operations. This role is expected to develop working knowledge of the IT Systems & Security Engineer's domain sufficient to provide continuity during absence.
Basic Addigy MDM health monitoring and policy review — ability to identify and escalate issues.
Security monitoring triage awareness — ability to identify and escalate basic alerts using established runbooks.
Endpoint inventory awareness — understanding of the Mac fleet state and active lifecycle activities.
Requirements
Foundational understanding of virtualization concepts — exposure to VMware vSphere or vCenter in any environment ( homelab , coursework, internship, or professional).
Familiarity with backup and recovery concepts; any exposure to Veeam is a plus.
Linux administration experience — servers at DataXstream are primarily Linux; comfort with the command line and terminal-based administration is essential.
Strong terminal skills — you are comfortable administering systems via CLI without relying on a GUI.
Familiarity with Linux patch and configuration management — any exposure to SUSE Manager (SUMA), Ansible, or similar tooling is a plus.
Basic Windows Server experience — a small number of Windows servers exist alongside the Linux fleet.
Networking fundamentals: VLANs, DNS, DHCP, and basic firewall concepts.
Scripting ability — comfort writing Bash scripts for automation, task scheduling, and system administration is expected; Python is a plus.
Strong troubleshooting instincts and comfort working through problems independently.
Willingness to participate in on-call rotation and respond to infrastructure incidents.
Clear written communication — you document what you learn and what you change.
