Senior Data Engineer

IRIUM Portugal is an innovative and growing company focused on delivering high-quality data engineering solutions. They are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to build scalable, high-performance data platforms and analytics solutions using cloud-native technologies and Microsoft cloud data services. The role involves designing end-to-end data architectures, optimizing data pipelines, and mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities:

• Minimum 5 years of experience in Data Engineering, with a focus on cloud-native solutions and data architecture
• Strong experience in end-to-end data architecture and design, including ingestion, data modelling, storage, and orchestration
• Experience with Medallion Architecture or similar data architecture patterns
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft cloud data technologies, particularly: Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse
• Experience with other cloud platforms such as AWS or Google Cloud and equivalent data services will also be considered
• Hands-on experience with Data Warehousing and Data Lake solutions, such as Azure Data Lake, Delta Lake, BigQuery or Amazon Redshift
• Strong programming skills in Python, SQL and/or Spark
• Experience with Python data libraries such as Pandas, Boto3 or similar
• Strong knowledge of relational databases (Oracle, MS SQL Server or similar) and/or NoSQL technologies (MongoDB, Elasticsearch, GBQ or similar)
• Experience with DevOps/DataOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
• Experience implementing data validation, lineage, documentation, and monitoring at scale
• Ability to optimize data pipelines and storage solutions for performance, cost, and reliability
• English proficiency – minimum B2
• Ability to evaluate technical trade-offs and make clear and well-supported decisions
• Ability to communicate complex engineering decisions effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Experience mentoring mid-level and junior engineers and promoting engineering standards and best practices
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to break down complex and ambiguous challenges into actionable solutions
• Ownership mindset and ability to anticipate issues and contribute to the long-term evolution of data platforms
• Strong collaboration and communication skills
