To ensure a safe manufacturing environment, our Occupational Health and Safety Engineering team plays a crucial role in hazard prevention, conducting safety audits, providing training, and implementing risk mitigation strategies.

 

The Specialist, Occupational Safety, working under general direction, is responsible for supporting and coordinating plant-wide safety processes, emergency response planning, and compliance with regulations. This role will conduct daily operations including investigations, inspections, and root cause analyses, to improve safety programs and mitigate workplace hazards. Additionally, the role will also be responsible for staying updated on safety regulations, and collaborating with teams to identify and mitigate risks, while driving continuous improvement in safety programs.

 

In this position...

• Providing advisory services in technical and non-technical safety topics including safety regulations and work towards fostering zero-incident health, safety, and environment (HSE) culture throughout the business unit through extensive interaction with senior internal and external personnel on significant matters.
• Coordinates with senior stakeholders to implement plant-wide safety processes including the company’s Safety Operating System (SOS), emergency response planning, training, off-standard approvals, and compliance with statutory authorities, regulations, and standards while actively supporting the plant's Emergency Response Team. Communicates effectively with and acts as a liaison to statutory authorities, regulatory bodies, and corporate representatives.
• Independently conducts the daily operations in the assigned department including supporting, sustaining, and improving all safety programs, tasks, communications, investigations, reporting, etc. Liaises with the plant and network medical, security functions, and Unifor Health and Safety representatives.
• Implements incident investigations, root cause analysis, statistical analysis, and departmental safety inquiries and recommends preventive and corrective action. Conducts regular inspections and audits to identify and assess workplace hazards and risks for preventive maintenance completion, including interfacing with external consultants/auditors if required. Maintains accurate records for reporting incidents, injury statistics, root cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions taken etc. in accordance with legal and organizational requirements.
• Recommends updates or changes to department policies and processes to maintain the workforce and employee safety whilst ensuring adherence to local laws, regulations and corporate safety and health policies. Promotes safe and hazard-free work processes within the facilities.
• Collaborates with teams to identify and mitigate risks associated with the workplace and coordinates implementation & continuous improvement in the facility’s occupational and general safety programs.
• Analyzes new and existing jobs, processes, products, and systems to recommend and steer the implementation of engineering safety control and determine the severity, probability, and outcome of hazards.
• Develops and improves the department safety and equipment specifications for new technology, lessons learned, and standard updates. Maintains safety-related documentation, including manuals, policies, procedures, injury statistics, and incident reports.
• Delivers department-specific ergonomics training, general and fire safety trainings, machinery and equipment safety trainings at plant locations, new hire orientation, management safety training, energy control, and power lockout, root cause analysis, as well as other training as conditions may demand.
• Stays updated on relevant occupational safety, health regulations, standards, industry best practices, and organizational Health and Safety policies and has a strong understanding with respect to the application of safety concepts and standards at the workplace. Provides guidance and support to management and employees in understanding and adhering to safety regulations.

You'll have...

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety/Health Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or a related field and/or commensurate work experience. (Successful candidates will be required to provide proof of degree completion for the highest level of education attained. If the degree was obtained from a school outside of Canada, an Education Credential Assessment report showing Canadian equivalency is also required.) 

 

Experience:

• 3-5 years of work experience in Occupational Safety and Health or a related field.
• Involves frequent (defined as one to two-thirds of the time) lifting of more than 10 to 25 pounds. Work performed requires a good deal of walking or standing and may include some sedentary work and working conditions that include moderate noise levels related to the use of office equipment or machinery. May involve exposure to varying outside temperatures.

Experience:

• Automotive/manufacturing experience.
• Work experience in a unionized environment.
• Certified Safety Professional.
• Certified Industrial Hygienist.

The expected annual salary range for this Ford of Canada position is $85,000.00 - $135,000.00and individuals may be eligible to participate in our Annual Compensation bonus program.
