The Electronic Services Division (ESD) supports all goals, most directly sustaining and enhancing agency infrastructure and business processes, by improving collaboration outcomes between WSP business and technology divisions, using consistent planning processes, increasing business continuity capabilities, and providing quality communication services.

Examples of duties

The Field Support Section delivers daily operational support for the Washington State Patrol (WSP) and its mission-critical statewide voice and data communications systems. These systems serve not only the WSP but also partner agencies and other public safety customers across the state.

The Wireless Communications Systems Technician 4 is a senior-level technical expert responsible for 24/7 maintenance, installation, and support of WSP public safety communications equipment. This includes digital and analog microwave radio systems, land mobile radio base stations and repeaters, voting systems, dispatch consoles, and other specialized electronic equipment essential to agency operations. The Wireless Communications Systems Technician 4 also serve as regional subject matter experts, providing advanced maintenance, installation, and support for mobile and portable two-way radios and a wide range of additional electronic support systems. In addition, the Wireless Communications Systems Technician 4 may be assigned system-level administration and monitoring responsibilities for highly complex radio and network environments, including multi-site networks, microwave paths, trunked radio systems, encryption management, and overall system optimization.

Our new teammate will be able to:

• Maintains, monitors, troubleshoots, repairs, and enhances the Agency's State-wide Radio infrastructure, including LMR radio base stations, Microwave backhaul and supporting ancillary equipment. 
• Position applies expertise and uses in-depth knowledge to resolve  complex issues in wireless communications systems such as Internet protocol-bases land mobile radio systems, microwave systems, networking systems, connectivity and support equipment. 
• Responsible for maintaining agency digital and analog telecommunications equipment and radio networks. This includes digital microwave networks, radio base stations, dispatch consoles and repeaters throughout the region and state. 
• Conduct advanced technical work involving the troubleshooting, diagnosis, and resolution of both basic and complex communication system issues, including signal interference, service outages, and operational functionality of dispatch consoles, software/network interfaces, mobile and portable radios, base stations, and repeater configurations. 
• Maintain and support advanced IP-based communication networks, including VHF and 800 Mhz trunking systems, voice and data transmission, interoperability frameworks, and emergency communication platforms. Systems include P25 trunking and conventional radio equipment, network routers and switches, dispatch console workstations, and interoperability gateways. 
• Maintains and repairs mountaintop radio sites, repeater infrastructure, duplexers, isolators, antennas, network cabling, suppression equipment, monitoring equipment, and off grid power systems. As part of reoccurring maintenance at mountaintop radio sites, inspects building structures for any defects, damage, and structural integrity. 
• Maintain and/or develop comprehensive records, including site drawings and network configurations and block diagrams, radio site engineering and data records, microwave path schematics, technical data sheets, specific and detailed work orders and asset management system updates.  

Travel: Travel statewide is required for agency and division functions, training, WSP infrastructure support and project support and this may result in overnight stays. A WSP employee with an assigned take-home vehicle shall live within forty-five (45) miles of their assigned district, division or duty station.

Schedule:  This position is subject to call out and will participate in a standby rotation. While in standby, the technician is required to be available and fit for duty 24x7. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Must possess or obtain a valid Washington State driver's license.
• Two  years of formal education or training in electronics.
• Five years of paid experience in maintenance and repair of at least one of the following:
  • Two-way radio systems and equipment
  • Digital Microwave carrier systems. 
  • Wireless and wired data network systems
• Experience and understanding of computer based applications.
• Knowledge and understanding of computer networks, wiring standards and protocols.
