Vantor is seeking an experienced Software Development Engineer to join their Basemaps team. The role involves leading the technical roadmap for feature data products and engaging in hands-on software development to solve complex problems in geospatial technologies.
Responsibilities:
- Own and maintain the technical roadmap for our feature data products
- Establish engineering priorities in partnership with product owners, engineering leadership, platform teams, and operational stakeholders
- Provide architectural direction for scalable geospatial and vector data-processing systems
- Remain hands-on in software development, prototyping, code reviews, debugging, performance optimization, and production support
- Evaluate and adopt modern open-source technologies for geospatial processing, distributed computing, workflow orchestration, and data management
- Balance near-term delivery priorities with team members during stand-ups
- Demonstrate working software and contribute to iterative product development
- Monitor and maintain AWS-based system health and performance
- Participate in system design, requirements gathering, and technical documentation
- Collaborate across teams to coordinate dependencies and deliver integrated capabilities
- Promote the effective use of AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity, software quality, and documentation
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Geography, or a related technical field
- 8+ years of professional experience
- Demonstrated experience serving as a lead engineer or technical owner for a software platform, product, or major technical initiative
- Strong understanding of Docker containerization technologies
- Strong working knowledge of GDAL/OGR, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, spatial indexing, coordinate reference systems, and spatial data-processing concepts
- Proven ability to provide technical guidance and mentor other engineers without direct management responsibility
- Familiarity with Agile software engineering practices and methodologies
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Geospatial Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience with modern geospatial technologies and formats, including GeoParquet, DuckDB spatial, vector tiles, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage, or Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF
- Experience working throughout the full software development lifecycle
- Knowledge of AWS or comparable cloud platforms
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins or similar tools
- Knowledge of geospatial, geodesic, photogrammetric, or remote sensing technologies
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Self-motivated, collaborative, and detail-oriented with a willingness to work closely with technical systems and processes
