
Position Summary
The Network Team Supervisor leads the strategy, operations, and continuous improvement of MassDOT’s enterprise network infrastructure environment. This role is responsible for overseeing the implementation, support, security, and lifecycle management of core networking technologies, including firewalls, switches, routers, load balancers, and related network services across on-premises and cloud environments.
The Supervisor oversees a team of network engineers and administrators responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, availability, security, compliance, monitoring, patching, backup, and disaster recovery readiness of all network infrastructure. This position drives operational excellence through automation, standardization, process improvement, and proactive service management while ensuring alignment with MassDOT and EOTSS technology and cybersecurity standards.
This role is responsible for managing resource allocation, prioritization, and the timely delivery of implementation and maintenance initiatives. The Supervisor collaborates closely with infrastructure, cybersecurity, cloud, application, and project management teams to support enterprise initiatives and deliver secure, scalable, and resilient network solutions that support MassDOT operations and services for the Commonwealth.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical leadership with operational management experience, bringing a strategic mindset focused on modernization, service reliability, team development, and customer service excellence. The Supervisor also serves as the technical lead and project manager for small to mid-sized infrastructure projects, ensuring successful execution in accordance with MassDOT IT governance, standards, and project management practices.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position is responsible for performing the following duties:
Lead the day-to-day operations of the enterprise network infrastructure team supporting switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, and related network technologies.
Establish operational priorities, allocate resources, and manage workloads to align with organizational goals and service delivery expectations.
Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to technical staff through regular feedback, training, and performance management.
Foster a collaborative, accountable, and customer-focused team culture while promoting knowledge sharing and cross-training to reduce operational risk and eliminate single points of failure.
Ensure compliance with MassDOT and EOTSS cybersecurity, operational, and governance standards across all network environments.
Oversee vulnerability remediation, patch management, audit response activities, and compliance initiatives, including participation in PCI and other regulatory audits.
Develop and enforce network security standards, policies, and operational procedures.
Ensure all network infrastructure is properly monitored, documented, backed up, and recoverable in accordance with business continuity and disaster recovery requirements.
Implement and maintain monitoring, alerting, automation, and configuration management solutions to improve operational visibility and efficiency.
Track, analyze, and report on operational metrics, service availability, and SLA performance to leadership.
Manage relationships with network service providers and vendors.
Lead incident response and escalation management efforts to minimize downtime and service disruption.
Identify opportunities to modernize infrastructure through automation, cloud integration, process optimization, and emerging technologies.
Collaborate with cybersecurity, cloud, systems, application, and vendor teams to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues.
Develop and review network architecture designs, implementation plans, technical standards, diagrams, and documentation.
Evaluate existing network environments and recommend improvements to increase scalability, resiliency, performance, and security.
Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices related to networking, cybersecurity, and cloud infrastructure.
Support enterprise infrastructure and modernization initiatives through technical leadership and cross-functional collaboration.
Serve as project manager or technical lead for small to mid-sized projects, including planning, execution, scheduling, risk management, and successful delivery within scope, timeline, and budget.
Partner with the Project Management Office (PMO) and other stakeholders on larger enterprise initiatives.
Communicate project status, risks, resource needs, and technical recommendations effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Participate in budgeting, forecasting, vendor coordination, and strategic technology planning activities.
Provide 24x7 operational leadership support for critical infrastructure incidents and emergency response activities as needed.
Provide hands-on administration of network equipment when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with cloud networking and infrastructure technologies, including AWS.
Experience with network automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools.
Familiarity with zero trust architecture, SD-WAN, and modern network security frameworks.
ITIL certification or equivalent IT service management experience.
Relevant industry certifications such as CCNP, Fortinet NSE, AWS, or equivalent.
