Lead Backend Engineer

Epitec is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer to join the team behind BigFuture, College Board's platform that helps millions of students explore college, careers, and scholarships. This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an engineer who enjoys architecting solutions, mentoring teammates, and building scalable cloud-native applications.

Responsibilities:

• Lead design and development of scalable backend solutions in AWS
• Build and enhance student-facing products used by millions of users
• Partner with product owners, architects, and designers to deliver innovative solutions
• Develop modern applications using Node.js, TypeScript, AWS, and React
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical coaching
• Drive engineering best practices, CI/CD, observability, and operational excellence
• Help shape and implement Generative AI solutions and engineering standards

Requirements:

• 7+ years building scalable web applications in AWS environments
• 3+ years of Node.js development using TypeScript
• Strong AWS experience including Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, SNS, SQS, API Gateway, CloudWatch, IAM, and related services
• Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redshift, DynamoDB, or other databases
• Generative AI experience such as RAG solutions, LLM-powered applications, chatbot implementations, or model fine-tuning
• Experience with event-driven architectures and asynchronous programming
• Strong leadership, mentoring, and technical architecture experience
• React.js experience
• OpenSearch/Elasticsearch experience
• Experience building highly scalable education, SaaS, or consumer-facing platforms
