Space Ocean Corp is developing the infrastructure needed for sustainable operations in space and is seeking a Fluid Flow Simulation Engineer to lead computational modeling of fluid behavior in microgravity and orbital environments. The role focuses on developing high-fidelity simulations critical to in-space logistics, propellant management, and cryogenics.
Responsibilities:
- Perform CFD simulations of multiphase, free-surface, and capillary-dominated flows in reduced- or zero-gravity environments
- Model propellant sloshing, tank pressurization, phase change, cryogen storage/transfer, and fluid logistics for orbital depots and spacecraft
- Adapt and utilize NASA CFD tools (e.g., FUN3D , OVERFLOW ) and systems-level tools (e.g., GFSSP , CryoSIM ) alongside or complementary to OpenFOAM for microgravity fluid problems
- Set up and validate simulations with appropriate physics: incompressible/compressible solvers, surface tension, contact angles, turbulence models, and near-zero body forces
- Analyze fluid system performance under perturbations, uncertainties, and operational constraints relevant to LEO, cislunar, and deep-space missions
- Develop, validate, and optimize custom simulation workflows, scripts, and post-processing tools (Python, MATLAB, etc.)
- Support mission architecture studies, orbital refueling concepts, and in-space water stabilization technologies
- Collaborate with propulsion, systems, GNC, and mission operations teams
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, design documentation, and contribute to proposals and technology demonstrations
Requirements:
- BS or MS in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Fluid Dynamics, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field
- Strong background in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and multiphase flow modeling
- Experience with CFD tools such as OpenFOAM, FUN3D, OVERFLOW, ANSYS, COMSOL, or similar
- Familiarity with NASA software catalog tools (FUN3D, OVERFLOW, GFSSP, CryoSIM, etc.) is highly valued
- Programming experience with Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar for simulation scripting and data analysis
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Experience simulating microgravity fluid phenomena (sloshing, capillary flows, cryogenics, propellant management)
- Knowledge of orbital fluid logistics, in-space refueling, or life-support fluid systems
- Experience with mesh generation (Cart3D or similar), overset grids, adjoint optimization, or Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis
- Familiarity with NASA or commercial spaceflight fluid/thermal requirements and mission environments
- Hands-on experience adapting general-purpose CFD codes for reduced-gravity or vacuum conditions
