Upstart is a leading AI lending marketplace focused on reducing the cost and complexity of borrowing for Americans. As a Software Engineer on the Unsecured Installments team, you'll build and improve borrower-facing web experiences while collaborating with product and design teams to enhance the overall borrower journey.
Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain borrower-facing web experiences using React and TypeScript, translating designs and product requirements into clean, responsive, accessible interfaces
- Work across the stack to connect frontend experiences to backend services and APIs, contributing to full-stack features that span the borrower journey
- Partner closely with product managers, designers, and backend engineers to scope, build, and ship features that improve borrower flows and reduce friction
- Write well-tested, maintainable code and participate in code reviews, helping raise the quality and consistency of the team's frontend codebase
- Contribute to performance, reliability, and observability of the experiences you own, and help debug and resolve issues across environments
- Support experimentation and iterative improvements to borrower flows, using data and feedback to inform what gets built next
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience) and 4-5+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong proficiency building web applications with React and TypeScript, including component design, state management, and consuming REST or GraphQL APIs
- Full-stack experience contributing to backend services and APIs in a language such as Python, Java, Kotlin, Ruby, or Node.js
- Solid fundamentals in writing tested, maintainable code and collaborating through code review in a team environment
- Ability to work effectively with product and design partners to deliver features from requirements through production
- Experience building consumer-facing products with attention to performance, accessibility, and user experience
- Familiarity with modern frontend tooling and testing frameworks (e.g., Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress) and CI/CD workflows
- Exposure to fintech, lending, payments, or other regulated financial products with complex user journeys
- Experience with experimentation, A/B testing, or feature-flagging in production environments
- Active use of AI tools in engineering workflows, with a thoughtful perspective on how AI is reshaping software development
- Passion for building products that expand access to credit and improve financial outcomes for consumers
