Clearway Energy Group is leading the transition to a world powered by clean energy, overseeing a portfolio of substantial generating capacity across the United States. The Substation O&M Field Engineer will manage the operation, maintenance, and repair of high voltage electrical equipment at substations supporting wind and solar power plants, ensuring compliance with industry standards and effective troubleshooting.
Responsibilities:
- Providing technical support, troubleshooting, and electrical testing for Clearway Energy’s high voltage substations in support of the wind and solar plants in Texas and the central U.S. Ensure compliance with electrical industry standards and company objectives
- Assist in creating procedures for substation Lock-out, Tag-out, HV switching, and safety grounding in substations
- Create written procedures for others to follow for various common substation maintenance tasks, such as testing circuit breakers or transformers
- Instruct, train, and assist site personnel in understanding and troubleshooting associated substation equipment and system protections
- Review and assist in the development of work scopes for planned substation outages
- Be on-site during planned major maintenance outages to assist and supervise as needed. Follow the contractor's work progress. Ensure unsatisfactory test results/conditions recorded are resolved, verified, and addressed before contractor demobilization and restoration of equipment
- Supervise the implementation of company procedures by contracted testing personnel. Review and file final relay test reports
- Ensure modifications made to site equipment are documented for future reference. Maintain test logs
- Review site-specific equipment manuals for maintenance and repair requirements
- Evaluate electrical fault reports and events, verifying proper protective relay performance (mis-operation)
- Support the NERC Compliance program, with specific regard to PER-006, PRC-004, PRC-005, and PRC-025
- Travel with work truck within the associated region to supervise and assist with substation maintenance activities– approximately 50% (airline travel may be required for some locations in the assigned region)
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology focused on electrical power systems
- OR a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience directly with electric substation high voltage equipment (A high school diploma or GED would be required)
- Completion of a formal apprenticeship program OR equivalent combination of work experience AND technical training will be considered
- Must possess a working knowledge of MV and HV electrical equipment, overhead lines, underground lines, and substation systems
- Must possess an understanding of electrical work safety, environmental and safety rules, and regulations, and first aid procedures
- Must possess knowledge of electrical high voltage test equipment for testing electrical insulation resistance
- Must possess significant experience reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams (interviewers will be tested on this item)
- Must be able to maintain professional and positive relationships with owners, customers, internal contractors, and external contractors
- Must have the ability to lead technical training of plant maintenance personnel
- Must be able to query SEL protective relays to identify and troubleshoot the cause of relay trips
- May be required to work flexible work hours
- Must possess a valid driver's license – Class B, or Class A is preferred
- Experience programming and testing SEL and GE protection relays is not required, but would be a big plus
