Job Summary:
Provides oral hygiene and preventive services to dental patients. Evaluates and assesses provision of services. Performs procedures safely in compliance with regulations under the direction of a dentist. Prepares materials and equipment for treatment and has them ready for dentist's use.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
- Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent (some certifications will require Bachelor’s): Preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Dental Hygienist licensure in the state of practice: Required
- Radiation Safety Certificate: Required
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy: Required
Facility Specific License/Certifications:
- AHA-BLS or ARC-BLS: Required
Essential Functions:
- Conducts patient screening procedures; such as assessment of oral health conditions, review of the health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck inspection, dental charting and taking blood pressure and pulse.
- Takes and develop dental radiographs (x-rays). Removes calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of the teeth. Applies preventive materials to the teeth (e.g., sealants and fluorides).
- Teaches patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling). Counsels patients about good nutrition and its impact on oral health.
- Makes impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth used by dentists to evaluate patient treatment needs).
- Prepares patients for services, documents procedures and assists with other office management activities, i.e., scheduling patients, as needed.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
