Metric Geo is a leading engineering consultancy seeking a Substation Protection & Control Engineer to join its team in College Station, Texas. This role focuses on delivering high-quality protection and control design solutions for utility and developer clients across transmission and distribution projects.
Responsibilities:
- Act as a primary technical interface with clients, providing expertise in substation protection and control methodologies
- Lead the development of design deliverables for utility upgrades, including greenfield and brownfield AIS substations
- Provide engineering oversight and serve as an independent technical advisor representing client interests
- Interpret client standards and protection philosophies, offering guidance to ensure effective application in design
- Independently develop complete protection and control design packages, ensuring delivery on time and within budget
- Mentor and support junior engineers and designers within the team
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support business development activities, including proposals and tender submissions
- Contribute to industry engagement through participation in professional organisations, conferences, and networking events (desirable)
- Develop detailed engineering designs and drawings, including:
- Panel layouts and arrangements
- Single-line and three-line diagrams
- AC and DC schematics
- Equipment and relay panel wiring diagrams
Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience in substation protection and control design for transmission and distribution systems
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States, with the ability to obtain licensure in Texas
- Minimum of 9 years' experience in protection and control design within a utility or consulting environment
- Advanced knowledge of protection schemes and relaying functions, including: Line and transformer protection, Breaker failure protection, Capacitor bank protection, Communication-based schemes, Differential protection
- Experience with SCADA communication system design for substations
- Ability to perform: AC/DC station service calculations and studies, Voltage drop calculations, Control and fibre cable sizing and selection
- Experience developing and reviewing vendor specifications (e.g., control buildings, switchgear)
- Strong QA/QC capabilities for engineering calculations, drawings, and specifications
- Proficiency with CADD tools (e.g., Autodesk or Bentley platforms)
- Experience in project scoping, task order preparation, and design reviews
- Ability to ensure compliance with client and regulatory requirements
- Willingness to conduct field visits and provide construction-phase engineering support
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, or a related discipline
- Willingness to relocate to College Station, TX or work in a hybrid capacity
